Caring for a Monstera friedrichsthalii (commonly called Monstera Monkey Mask) is fairly easy, as it's a resilient plant. Here’s how to help it thrive:

1. Light Requirements:

  • Bright, Indirect Light: The Monkey Mask thrives in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, while low light will slow its growth and result in fewer perforations.
  • Low Light Tolerance: While it can tolerate some lower light, it will grow more slowly and may not develop its characteristic fenestrated leaves.

2. Watering:

  • Water When Dry: Water your Monstera Monkey Mask when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry to the touch. Overwatering can cause root rot, so always check the soil moisture before watering.
  • Avoid Water Sitting: Ensure the pot has good drainage and never allow the plant to sit in water.
  • Frequency: Depending on environmental conditions, this might be once every 7-10 days. During the winter, reduce watering since the plant's growth slows.

3. Humidity:

  • Moderate to High Humidity: Like most Monsteras, the Monkey Mask prefers moderate to high humidity. 50-60% humidity is ideal.

4. Temperature:

  • Warm Temperatures: This plant prefers temperatures between 65°F to 85°F (18°C to 29°C). It’s sensitive to cold temperatures and should be kept in areas above 50°F (10°C).
  • Avoid Drafts: Keep your plant away from cold drafts, air conditioners, or heaters that may stress it.

5. Soil:

  • Well-Draining Soil: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix. Adding perlite or orchid bark to the soil can improve drainage and help prevent root rot.
  • Repotting: Repot your Monkey Mask every 1-2 years to refresh the soil and allow for root growth. Choose a pot that’s 1-2 inches larger in diameter than the current one.

6. Fertilizing:

  • During Growing Season: Feed your Monstera Monkey Mask with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during spring and summer when it’s actively growing.

7. Pruning and Maintenance:

  • Prune to Control Size: You can prune the plant to control its size and shape, especially if it starts becoming too long or leggy. Cut back any long vines just above a node to encourage bushier growth.
  • Cleaning: Wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust, improving photosynthesis and overall appearance.

8. Support (Optional):

  • Since the Monstera Monkey Mask is a vining plant, it will benefit from a moss pole or trellis for vertical growth. This encourages it to grow upwards instead of trailing and helps it achieve a more compact, healthy shape.
  • If you don’t have a support structure, it can also trail and cascade down from a hanging pot.

9. Pests:

  • Watch for Pests: Common pests include mealybugs, spider mites, and aphids. If you notice pests, treat your plant with neem oil or an insecticidal soap.
  • Inspect Regularly: Check the undersides of leaves and stems regularly for any signs of pests.

10. Common Problems:

  • Yellowing Leaves: This can be a sign of overwatering, poor drainage, or lack of light. Ensure the plant isn’t sitting in water and it’s getting enough light.
  • Brown Leaf Tips: This can be caused by low humidity, underwatering, or over-fertilizing. Increase humidity and check your watering routine.
  • Slow Growth: Lack of light or too small of a pot can cause slow growth. Make sure it’s in bright indirect light and has enough room for the roots.
